MICROCHIPPING
Why Microchipping Your Pet is Important
Having a missing pet is one of the worst feelings in the world! Implanting a microchip in your pet can give you peace of mind in knowing that your information will be with your pet at all times. At Oak Elm Animal Hospital, our veterinarians strongly encourage everyone to microchip their pets! Let’s ensure that every pet has a safe return home.
The Procedure
A microchip implantation is a safe and simple procedure that can be performed during a regular wellness exam—there is no anesthesia necessary. A microchip is a small, rice-size chip that is implanted in between your pet’s shoulder blades (under the skin). This chip is encoded with a unique identification number—and contains your personal information—that can be scanned by shelters, animal hospitals, and animal control units across the country. Once scanned, the microchip will reveal your pet’s name, your contact information, and his or her animal hospital.
What to do if you have found a Pet
If you have come across a lost or missing pet, you can use the Pet Microchip Lookup website to locate the pet owner based on the information encoded in the pet’s microchip. If you are not sure if the pet you found has a microchip, you can take that pet to any pet hospital, shelter, or animal control unit and they can scan the pet for a microchip.
